Taste experience # 4 5 September 2024
Well, it’s been over a month since my last sausage roll report and that’s just not good enough on my part. I did have a sausage roll in Murchison, but it was so bad I didn’t write about it - I don’t even think it contained meat. I did consider writing about it, whatever it was, but I can hear my mother saying, “if you have not got anything nice to say at all, just don’t say anything.”
I have looked in various places, but nothing really tempted me until today. I had to go into Christchurch City to meet a friend and as always, I was early, so I went for a stroll to the Riverside Market just off Oxford Terrace and I noticed “The Butcher’s Shop”, a really nice shop with welcoming staff.
They only had one type of sausage roll, the Chilli Roll, but in full size or half size. I was meant to be having lunch with my friend so decided on the half size, which was $4.50, a reasonable price because it was not a small sausage roll.
The taste:
The sausage meat filling was really good, being juicy and tasty and the chili was just fantastic. The pastry was excellent, holding together well yet still being flaky and it had a chili flake topping.
I just couldn’t fault this sausage roll although for some the chili would be too hot, and because there was no other choice I have had to reflect it in the marking. But so far, the best ever sausage roll.
The verdict: x/10
Meat: 9/10
Pastry: 9/10
Taste: 10/10
Presentation: 9/10

OVERALL: 45/50 (90%)
The following section provides a comparison of sausage rolls I have sampled - this will be updated after each tasting.
